Winter Beach Hunting

4/9/2016

Welcome to the blog!  How was your winter?  Betty and I had a decent winter silver-wise, but only one small piece of gold each.  Where has all the gold jewelry gone?  I think it went into the melting pots when gold skyrocketed in 2008 and stayed there for a couple years.  So many people sold their gold to refineries, but to whom did the refineries sell their gold?  I hope most of it stayed in this country and didn’t go to China.

I was almost too warm with all the layers I wore that day!
But I digress...  With the mild winter, Betty and I were able to get out quite a few times.  We always laugh about how many layers of clothes we’re wearing.  Let’s see…  silkies, thermals, turtleneck, fleece, coat…  LOL!  But there was never a time we felt cold on the beach – even while hunting in a shallow layer of snow.

Over a 6 week period in February and March, I found 15 silvers, 2 buffalos and a bunch of Wheaties, not to mention hundreds of really crusty clad coins and “greenies.”  Betty did about the same.  I’m sure Derrick and Henry found many times that, but for us at least it beat hunting those empty berms that stretch from Spring Lake to Long Branch.

These were typical of most of the coins we dug, but in order to find the older ones, crust and rust is a must!

See the edge of the mercury dime peeking out of the crust?
So let’s see and hear what you found.  Did you take a trip somewhere with your metal detector?  What about you land hunters?  I’m pretty sure the ground remained unfrozen much of the winter.  I know Al found not one but two very rare 1793 half cents about 6 years  apart!  Awesome!  Please leave a comment telling us how your winter was, and if you have pictures please share them with us!  -  Amy
